"Dog Days" are coming to three Western Colorado public pools, and it is absolutely imperative you take your canine to participate. Don't have a dog? Get one. This is the coolest (pun intended) event in the valley. Here are five reasons why you don't want to miss it.

"Dog Days" are just that, "dogs only" access to public pools in Grand Junction, Fruita, and Palisade. As summer ends, the various parks and rec agencies in the valley have to drain their pools. Just before they shut them down for the season, the pools are opened for an extra day so dogs of every breed, shape, and size, can take a little swim.

This year's schedule is as follows. Please note that each of the three events has their own hours of operation and cost:

  • September 6 - Palisade Pool
    • 4 pm to 7 pm
    • Cost - $5.00 for one dog or $10.00 for three dogs
  • September 10 - Fruita Pool
    • 10 am to Noon
    • Cost - Donation to Roice-Hurst Humane Society
  • September 11 - Lincoln Park Pool - Grand Junction
    • small dogs - 10 am to 11:30 am
    • all dogs - 11:30 am to 2 pm
    • Cost - $5.00 for each dog. Three or more dogs per family can swim for $12.00

Why would you want to participate in this? I've been to the event for several years in a row, and here are my top five reasons:

  • Your dog has endured a long, hot summer, and deserves a chance to cool down.
  • How often does your dog get a private pool?
  • It's a chance for your pet to socialize with other dogs in a secure environment.
  • You'll really get a kick out of seeing dogs of all shapes and sizes taking a dive.
  • Every dog deserves their day, and this is it.

There are people out there who look forward to this event all year. It's as much fun for you as it is for your dog. Make plans to attend one, or all three, of this year's "Dog Days."
