During a charity show in Chicago earlier this month, Devin Dawson got to reminiscing about the time he spent with Tim McGraw on tour over the summer. Not only did that precious time begin a friendship between the two men, it also spawned a new song called "I've Got a Truck."

"Tim was telling me how he got started, and he was telling me how at the beginning, all he had was a song and a truck," Dawson recalled to the crowd. "I asked him if he had written a song about that, and he said he hadn’t. So, I smoked a huge joint in the back of the bus and wrote this song."

Currently out on his first-ever headlining tour, Dawson says it's this sort of honesty that he plans to always exhibit as he continues to add to his fan base.

"People care about what I want to say and they connect with it," Dawson tells Taste of Country. "That gives me the confidence going forward to say all that I want to say. I'm going to be doing this for my whole life. I’m not going to be going anywhere and it's really cool to know that we are going to set our feet in this industry and conquer it."

He’s looking to conquer it with songs like his current single "Dark Horse," a song that made an impact on everyone who listened to it very early in the game.

"I think having 'Dark Horse' as the next single was a no-brainer for me," he says. "It wasn’t the easiest choice, but to me, it was the obvious choice. It's a song that means so much to me and everyone else and it really was a fan-decided thing. It raised the hands of so many people. I just knew that the song deserved to be heard by the world and not just the people that already know it. I'm really excited."
