It could be a lot worse, but Colorado ranks in the bottom half of states when it comes to safe driving.

If you've traveled outside the state of Colorado at all, you know our state does not have the market on bad drivers, but, we do have our share. At least one of them lives in Grand Junction - a lady I saw going south on Horizon Drive and making a left-hand turn from the left lane of northbound traffic. Think about it, and picture it.

Bankrate.com ranked all the states based on fatal crashes, car thefts, commute times, gasoline and repair costs, and insurance premiums. Colorado comes in at #28 on the list.

Some of the worst states in the nation, based on the study are Hawaii, New York, Texas, and California, but the least safe state is Louisiana.

The safest states include South Dakota, Nebraska, and Wyoming, with Idaho being at the top of the list.

There seems to be a common thread here. Notice how the less populated the state, the safer it is for driving?
