The first Colorado officer to be sentenced for an on-duty shooting in more than 20 years.

James Ashby, a former police officer with the Rocky Ford Colorado department, was sentenced to 16 years in prison for a fatal shooting in 2014.

The records show that Ashby followed 27-year-old Jack Jacquez inside his mother's home and shot him in the back.

Ashby claims that Jacquez mouthed off to him when he stopped him while skateboarding. Ashby also claims he thought that Jacquez was attempting to rob the house that he had entered.

However, the brother of another Rocky Ford Police Department officer, who was on a ride along with Ashby, contradicts Ashby's story. Kyle Moore, the passenger, stated that there was no back talking and that the victim walked to the side of the house where his mother let him in.

Ashby had only been with the department five months. He had been fired from his job.
