When it comes to keeping their children safe in school, Colorado parents overwhelmingly prefer metal detectors over armed teachers.

In a study conducted by Quinnipiac University and reported by Denver's CBS4, 75 percent of parents believe metal detectors should be installed in schools.

There have also been two polls within the last few months that indicate roughly half of Colorado voters approve of teachers carrying guns. The Colorado Legislature however, has refused to permit teachers to carry firearms on school grounds.

The state's largest teachers union says it's members oppose carrying guns, they do however, support school resource and security officers who may be armed. Colorado Education Association President Kerrie Dallman says,

Student safety is a primary concern as educators, however we believe money is better invested in mental health services to make sure acts of violence don’t happen.”

So far, the Colorado Legislature has failed to pass a bill that would provide funding for resource officers in every school in the state.
