The world is filled with gross food - that people actually eat and love - and the grossest food invented in Colorado has been identified. Perhaps you ate it today.

Thrillist has identified the grossest food people love originating in each state and the choice for Colorado is shredded wheat.

Henry Perky is credited with inventing shredded wheat in Denver in 1890. He's the one who came up with the process to turn wheat into strips and form pillow-like biscuits which have adorned millions of breakfast tables over the years.

After Perky died and his patent on shredded wheat expired, Kellogg's seized the opportunity and patented the shredded wheat biscuit in 1915, and the rest is history.

While millions of kids were growing up with Lucky Charms, Trix, and Frosted Flakes, I was choking down shredded wheat - and we're not talking the kind with frosting. That brilliant idea didn't happen until later.

Shredded wheat seemed to me to be something a horse should be eating - not a human being. I suppose it was tolerable as long as it stayed crunchy, but when individual strands became soaked with milk and turned soggy, Zane's gag reflexes kicked in.

Needless to say, a bit of shredded wheat has not touched my lips since the day I left home for college at age 18, and I'm not one bit sad about it.

I realize there are people who actually enjoy shredded wheat -- and maybe you are one of them. If you are, that's fine, but you just have to know you are enjoying Colorado's grossest food.
