The Colorado Mesa Mavericks begin conference play Saturday night when they travel to Alamosa to take on Adams State. After an overtime win over Dixie State to open the season, last week the Mavericks lost a disappointing 17-14 decision on a rain-soaked field at Kingsville, Texas. Now the Mavericks face a familiar foe as they try to put last week behind them.

The good news for the Mavericks is that they came out of the Texas A & M Kingsville game relatively unscathed after a brutally physical contest with Dixie State which made the CMU sideline look more like a M*A*S*H unit. Running back DJ Hubbard, who rushed for 129 yards last week suffered a shoulder injury, but is expected to play Saturday night.

The Mavericks employed two quarterbacks last week, Sophomore Aric Kaiser and freshman Andrew Cota and both complete 8 passes, with no interceptions. Senior wide receiver, despite playing with a cast on a broken hand, saw his first action of the year and led the team with 9 receptions for 97 yards.

Defensively against the Javelinas last week, the Mavericks forced two turnovers, recorded two safeties, and held their opponent to just 72 passing yards, but gave up 222 yards on the ground.

Like the Mavericks, Adams State is 1-1 on the season after falling to Eastern New Mexico last week. Colorado Mesa Head Coach Russ Martin says the Grizzlies are a defensive football team, but also has concerns about the strength of the offense.

Game time is 7:00pm Saturday in Alamosa and you can hear the game on ESPN Radio 1230 and you can also listen on-line.
