A Redlands Middle School teacher has been charged with child abuse, third-degree assault, second-degree criminal tampering along with harassment.

Mesa County Sheriff's Office issued a Felony Summons for a 58-year-old teacher accused of these offenses in an incident back in January of this year. From a KKCO News report, the child is an at-risk student.

This obviously has parents all throughout District 51 about their own children's safety. Especially since, according to the report, this is not the first incident of this nature to happen here in the Valley.

Now, this shouldn't cast a dark shadow over the teaching profession as a whole. It is unfortunate that there are situations like this. I guess you just don't know someone like you think you do. But, again before we all pass judgment, let's make sure we know all the facts.

The first court appearance for the accused will be in April. As of right now, the teacher has been placed on paid administrative leave and is innocent until proven guilty. If found guilty, the sentence would be 12-18 months in prison and up to $100,000 in fines.
