A brand new piece of art that can tell time  has been donated to the city of Grand Junction and placed at Las Colonias Park by the entrance of the Riverfront Trail.

Joe Burleigh was commissioned earlier this year to create the piece as a memorial to his father, Dr. Tom Burleigh who moved to Grand Junction in 1958, bought an apricot orchard on G Road, and spent 25 years working on a sundial.

According to a release from the City of Grand Junction, it took Joe a month to build this sundial piece with the gnomon set for 39 degrees, which is parallel to the axis of the earth, allowing you to tell time based on the shadow.

The family chose the site at Las Colonias to give a lot of people to enjoy it.  Joe Burleigh said "the more people that see it, the better the memorial to my dad."

The Grand Junction Commission on Arts and Culture worked in collaboration with the Riverfront Commission to accept the art donation for its public art collection.

You can get an up-close look at the artwork at Las Colonias Park, right next to the Western Colorado Botanical Gardens.
