The Super Moon is this Saturday and that means it will be larger and closer than any other time in 2014!

The term Super Moon is relatively new (only 4 years old) and means:

...a new or full moon which occurs with the moon at or near (within 90% of) its closest approach to Earth in a given orbit (perigee). In short, Earth, moon and sun are all in a line, with moon in its nearest approach to Earth.

When the moon reaches perigee it will be only 221,824 miles away.

If you do the math... it's 24,901.55 around the Earth, add two carry the one, you could go around eight times and that's how far away the moon is.

If you miss it this weekend, no worries the next dates for the Super Moon in 2014 are consecutive months August 10 and September 9.
